New Caledonia is located on the Pacific Ocean, approximately 1500 km from Australia. It consists of large and several small islands. The capital is Noumea, where we regularly dock by cruise ship. I mostly go out here for coffee and the internet because the nearby islands take several hours. The smaller islands where the ship anchors are Mare, Lifou and Isle of Pines. Here are 25 photos to inspire you to visit New Caledonia.
I always stay close to the shore, because the water is so beautiful. The colours are completely captivating, even when it’s raining. There are not many hiking opportunities in these places. The best things to do are snorkelling and island tours. So, if someone prefers relaxing rather than active programs, these places are perfect for them.
Seeing the turquoise water and the white sandy beaches, I just want to stay there all day and admire its beauty. Sometimes I feel like I’m dreaming and then I realize that is also part of reality. Paradise does exist.

Photos to inspire you to visit New Caledonia
1. Mare
There is a ‘natural aquarium’ on the island of Mare that not many people know about it. Because everyone heads straight to the beach (Yejele Beach) from the pier. I managed to discover this hidden place, the untouched Natural Aquarium. It is only a 45-minute walk from the pier, it seems far on a hot day. Signs show the way, so you won’t miss it if you are attentive. The views are really incredible.
2. Lifou
It is possible to swim in a cave on the island of Lifou. It’s not easy to find it, but as they say, the one who searches will find it. The cave is located behind the Catholic church, approx. 15 mins walk from the pier. Its depth is 7 meters, water is crystal clear and refreshing.
3. Isle of Pines
On these islands, it is also possible to take private photos with photographers working on the cruise ship. The crew can apply for this opportunity as well if they want some nice photos in paradise. I thought I will try it, so I chose Isle of Pines for the photoshoot. I tried what it is like to be on the other side of the camera.
Overall
These are the islands I have visited during my contracts. They have so many things to offer. When you are there you really feel like this is paradise. Most of the time I visited always the same beaches but of course, it depended on my break time. Swimming, relaxing, hiking, discovering, you can find everything you need. Don’t forget to take hiking shoes, some sunscreen lotion and your camera to capture the best moment of your vacation.
If you have any questions about these islands, feel free to leave me a comment below. I hope you enjoyed this little journey.
